To celebrate the agency's birthday co-founders Kelly Marks and Cara Ward roll up their sleeves for a quickfire round of 19 burning questions...

Q&A with...

Kelly Marks

1. What/where did you study? History of Art at Leeds.

2. Did you always want to work in public relations? As soon as I’d started as an intern in my first PR job I knew.

3. What do you love most about beauty and interiors? The way it can change the way you feel.

4. What is the one beauty product you couldn’t live without? Lip balm.

5. Why ‘Pure’? We wanted a word with PR in it and it happens to be the first two letters of Public and Relations. 

6. Describe the agency in 5 words. Hard working, results driven, dedicated.

7. Who was your first ever brand meeting with? Simon Ostler at L’Oréal who introduced us to Sean Hanna. 

8. Is there a stand-out year for you? Each year gets better and better.

9. How have your industries changed over the years? The biggest change is the number of new brands that enter the market and of course the change in publishing and social media.

10. Any advice for people starting out in PR? Get work experience to make sure you like it.  Go to a party alone, talk to three strangers and if that doesn’t scare you PR might be the right job.

11. What makes for a successful agency? A great team and clients that respect what you do for them.

12. Would you agree that team work is the dream work? I couldn’t do it alone.

13. Hopes for the next 19 years? More, bigger, better.

14. Who were your first ever press appointments with? Trailing behind my then boss, and following her orders of ‘don’t you dare say anything’ as I carried bags to a meeting with Kathy Phillips who was the Beauty Director at Vogue. 

15. Describe Cara in 3 words: Astute, loyal, hilarious.

16. What makes for a successful client relationship? Believe in their brand as much as you believe in your own.

17. What would your 'plan B' have been? I can’t even imagine.

18. It’s your birthday – make a wish (and share it). For people to be kinder to each other.

19. How do you juggle motherhood and careers? The best I can.

Cara Ward

1. What/where did you study? Biology at Kings College London.

2. Did you always want to work in public relations? No I started in TV research for kids' science programmes – it was meant to be a filler job!

3. What do you love most about beauty and interiors? Design is everywhere and affects everyone, from the bed you sleep in to the cup you drink from.

4. What is the one beauty product you couldn’t live without and why? Water.

5. Why ‘Pure’? It’s a great adjective and we wanted our campaigns to be clear and powerful.

6. Describe the agency in 5 words. Intelligent, energetic, creative, business-minded, brand-focused.

7. Who was your first ever brand meeting with? The Curtain Exchange.

8. Is there a stand-out year for you? 1999, when the fun started.

9. How have your industries changed over the years? Technology has been the game-changer, affecting retail in every way. So PR has changed too, we are a much more integral and integrated part of any business we work for. What hasn’t changed is good contacts, understanding your consumer and a well-researched, relevant story will always get the best results.

10. Any advice for people starting out in PR? Be passionate about your brands, research your industry, watch everyone and read everything.

11. What makes for a successful agency? Employing brilliant people who love what they do.

12. Would you agree that team work is the dream work? Absolutely, at Pure PR we really do have the most brilliant and bright employees. It makes me so happy to see the energy, creativity and fun that happens in our office every day.

13. Hopes for the next 19 years? Building the Pure Network world-wide.

14. Who were your first ever press appointments with? Now Vogue editor Edward Enninful when he was 19 and I tried to persuade him to feature a totally unsuitable product in i-D Magazine. A great lesson learnt.

15. Describe Kelly in 3 words. Absolutely. Bloody. Brilliant. 

16. What makes for a successful client relationship? Honesty, accuracy and great results.

17. What would your 'plan B' have been? A scientist who could make a difference in the world.

19. How do you juggle motherhood and careers? I’m too busy to answer that.
