My Shelfie : Slay in Your Lane's Yomi Adegoke & Elizabeth Uviebinené
Slay in Your Lane's Yomi Adegoke & Uviebinené
We work with the best in beauty and the best in interiors, so we thought it would be fun to invite our industry friends to take a supermarket sweep of our showroom, select their favourite products from our clients’ collections and display them on the iconic String Pocket Shelf (available at Skandium).
When our Co-Founder Kelly Marks first met the Co-Authors (and best friends, as it turns out) Yomi Adegoke & Elizabeth Uviebinené she was instantly hooked by their forward-thinking ideas and not-afraid-to-speak-out attitudes. Clear, concise, brutally honest and witty, the girls put pens to paper (or fingers to keyboard) with their new book Slay in Your Lane to address many issues they have experienced first hand as two black women growing up in today's society; education, dating, working and more.
The girls swung by our offices to tell us all about their book - which is hot off the press and will be available to buy from Waterstones - along with their must-have beauty products. Here's what they had to say...
When did you meet each other?
Yomi: We met in the first year of university - she was in the halls where most of the black students were and where I found myself commuting to everyday! After some time we hit it off and the rest is history.
What inspired you to write this book?
Yomi: Elizabeth called me one day and literally asked me to write it! She wanted a book that spoke to her as a black woman specifically, one that outlined her experiences in a way the “self-help” books she was reading at the time couldn’t. I thought it was a great idea and said we should do it together.
Describe each other in 3 words.
Yomi: Elizabeth is... Hilarious, Supportive, Tastemaker.
Elizabeth: Yomi is... Smart, Beautiful, Hilarious.
If the reader took one thing away with them, what would you like it to be?
Yomi: To know that their experiences are valid and not imagined, regardless of how often society may dismiss them.
Why ‘Slay in Your Lane’?
Yomi: One day Elizabeth sent me a picture of Solange randomly, captioned ‘Slay In Your Lane’. Solange is the poster child for doing just that, carving her own space outside of the shadow of being ‘Beyonce’s little sister’ and coming into her own. After she sent it, I said to her that ‘Slay In Your Lane’ was the name of the book.

e.l.f Beauty Shield Vitamin C Pollution Prevention Serum I’ve been using this for a few weeks now and I’m obsessed. It's very hydrating for the skin, has a light watery feel and isn't at all sticky like other serums I’ve used. Did I mention the GLOW?!

e.l.f Clarifying Charcoal Bubble Mask I’ve used this product a few times now and every time it minimises my pores and it’s incredibly soft. Best of all the bubbles tickle a little too!
e.l.f Perfect Finish HD Powder Probably the best setting powder I’ve used; it leaves my make up flawless throughout the day.
Moroccanoil Treatment My hair is very dry, thick and coarse - it’s type 4C, which means its tightly coiled and needs more moisture than most. Moroccanoil provides some much needed TLC to my thirsty strands.

Yomi's go-to for clean skin
plus, the citrusy scent is a real mood-booster

Yomi's secret weapon
"It feels a lot more expensive than it is"
Medik8 Glow Oil I use this lovely light oil every night before bed - a little goes a long way with Medik8 Glow Oil (it comes with a little pipette that ensures you only use a tiny amount at a time) and glow you will!
e.l.f Cosmetics Shimmer Highlighting Powder Love this - it’s a subtle highlighter, not too blinding but really makes you glow from every angle. Great pigment to that brushes easily pick up.
Super Facialist Hyaluronic Acid Firming Daily Brightening Cleanser This is a great cleanser for if your skin feels dehydrated. It makes my skin feel so soft and literally removes every inch of makeup, without drying it out - instead, it did the opposite!
Mary Kay Sail to the Moon Body Lotion Mary Kay products usually smell lovely but this smells absolutely delicious and is great for the warm weather, as it’s as light as it is moisturising.
This sinks in quickly to leave skin soft, smooth and heavenly-scented
e.l.f Cosmetics Cream Contour Palette - I used to use powder contours because I thought that cream contour might be too hard to work with. But this is so easy to blend and very buildable if you want to make it slightly more dramatic
Super Facialist Rose Brighten & Refine Facial Scrub As you may have noticed smell matters a lot to me in a product and this is another that smells divine. But more importantly, it does wonders for the skin - evening out skin, making it smoother and balancing tone.
e.l.f. Cosmetics Precision Multi Blender Massager Makeup This brush is incredible! It applies any quality of foundation perfectly evenly and always provides a flawless finish.
